Inspire Generations to Come

Those who observed Neil Armstrong land on the Moon all those years ago still remember every detail – where they were, who they were with and how they felt. As with the Apollo Moon landings, a human mission to Mars will inspire generations to believe everything is possible and anything can be achieved.
Our generation can experience something at least equally amazing. Not only will the mission be an amazing inspiration, science and understanding of space and the stars will be greatly advanced. This private 2018 mission will be the first major step toward landing the first men and women on Mars and it will change the way we look upon space exploration. Your support will show our partners & sponsors that the world is ready for this to happen. WE CAN AND SHOULD DO IT TOGETHER!

Become Involved in our Human Mission to Mars

While complex, Mars One has developed a realistic plan to establish a permanent settlement on Mars. Much of what was learned from Skylab, Mir and the International Space Station has resulted in vital data, experiences with systems and related know-how -- all of which are applicable to living on Mars. Our plan is built upon existing technologies available from proven suppliers. All equipment will be developed by industry leaders in the private space industry and integrated in established facilities.
In this Indiegogo campaign, we give you the opportunity to contribute to the first ever private mission to Mars. It will be the the first step in establishing a human outpost on the Red Planet. The earnings from this Indiegogo campaign will go to the Mission Concept Studies by Lockheed Martin and Surrey Satellite Technology LTD (SSTL) for our first unmanned mission in 2018, which will demonstrate hardware for the human mission in 2025.

A Groundbreaking Plan

In May 2018, a private lander and communications satellite will be launched from Earth to Mars. The main goal of this demonstration mission is to provide a proof of concept for several essential technologies for a human mission.
The Mars lander will be built by aerospace industry leader Lockheed Martin. The lander design is based on the successful Mars lander used in the 2007 NASA Phoenix mission. Lockheed Martin has a distinct legacy of participating in nearly every NASA mission to Mars. For the Phoenix mission, the company designed, built, tested and operated the lander for NASA.
A communications satellite, built by SSTL, will provide a high bandwidth communications system in a Mars synchronous orbit and will be used to relay data and a live video feed from the lander on the surface of Mars back to Earth.
This 2018 mission will be the first in preparation for human landing. The first Mars One crew is scheduled to land in 2025, with additional crew landing every two years. Before that, Mars One will have established a habitable, sustainable outpost via multiple missions scheduled between 2018 and 2022.
No human has ever landed on Mars. This is a lifelong dream for the Mars One team, all our advisers and ambassadors, astronaut applicants and millions of you across the world.
This project seems to me to be the only way to fulfill dreams of mankind’s expansion into space.
Prof. Gerard ‘t Hooft (The Netherlands), Nobel Prize winning Theoretical Physicist
The Mars One base can be built at low risk with the scientific and engineering data collected, and lessons learned from the many robotic missions conducted by both NASA and ESA that I have been part of. I am eager to contribute to the effort to develop a multi-planetary human society."
Terry Gamber (USA), worked on the lander designs for the Viking mission
Mars One represents a chance to establish a new home for humanity outside the cradle of the Earth. As such, it may be one of the most important steps we could take. The sort of home that Mars might become, however, will depend strongly on how we approach its challenges—and opportunities. I am pleased to help the Mars One team in dealing with both."
Prof. John D. Rummel, PhD (USA), Director of East Carolina University’s (ECU’s) Institute for Coastal Science and Policy Chairman of the COSPAR Panel on Planetary Protection
I joined the Mars One advisory board because I plan to retire on Mars... but not too soon! I want to help send some healthy settlers on ahead to get the place ready for me."
Esther Dyson (USA), angel investor and chairman of EDventure Holdings
If no one tries, no one will succeed. I'm proud to do what I can to help."
Dr. Robert Zubrin (USA), President of Pioneer Astronautics and founder and President of the Mars Society
Mars is not just a destination but rather our destiny in terms of human exploration and settlement off Earth."
James W. Rice, PhD (USA), Geologist and co-investigator on the Spirit and Opportunity Rovers
To be part of this Advisory Team for Mars One is both an honour and a challenge. I think this is an exciting and cutting edge project that will impact our society and the way we view the world. History has been made when the impossible is made possible and where the struggle is the impetus to change."
Prof. Raye Kass, PhD (Canada), Professor of Applied Human Sciences at Concordia University, Montreal
This is not the mission of one organization or one country. Our 2018 mission will be the foundation of humankind’s mission to Mars. Mars One will involve you in as many ways as possible, starting with perks you’ll receive in return for your contribution, including:
  • Access to summaries of the mission concept studies
  • Your message printed on the landing parachute
  • An invitation to the 2018 launch party
Achieving the goals of this campaign provides a major step forward in private space exploration and other essential benefits, including:
  • Providing the funding to successfully design a roadmap for the first private mission to Mars in 2018.
  • Developing the customized design of the NASA Phoenix platform that includes all Mars One experiments.
  • Drawing attention from potential large sponsors and partners to participate in our mission.
  • And, last but not least, announcing to the world we will achieve our mission objectives!

Q&A Crowdfunding and 2018 Mission

What if Mars One only gains part of the funds for this crowdfunding campaign?
Mars One does not rely on the crowdfunding for financing these studies. The contributions will help us achieve our goals more rapidly. Mars One has split up the work into parts. The current contracts cover the first steps in the 2018 mission. Lockheed Martin has started working on the mission concept for our 2018 Lander Mission.
Mars One will gain funds to send humans and cargo to Mars in a variety of ways. Mars One is a private and not a governmental initiative. Anyone interested can contribute in realizing the mission. Other than crowdfunding, the means of funding are as follows (not limited to):
  • Exclusive partnerships
  • Sponsorships
  • Sales of broadcasting rights
  • Involvement with high net worth individuals
  • Revenues from Intellectual Property
Why crowdfunding if Mars One has other means of funding?
We want this to be humankind’s mission to Mars and want to give everybody the opportunity to participate in space exploration. Crowdfunding helps Mars One to achieve our next financial goals more rapidly, but more importantly, it is a great way to involve the world.
Why did Mars One select Lockheed Martin for the 2018 Mars lander?
Lockheed Martin has a distinct legacy of participating in nearly every NASA Mars mission to date. They have built every aeroshell entry system that NASA has sent to Mars and built both Viking landers, the Phoenix lander and are currently working on NASA’s InSight lander. When we decided to move forward with the development of this private mission to Mars, we looked across the industry and determined Lockheed Martin was the obvious choice to build the lander.
Will there be science on the 2018 mission?
Our lander is more a technology demonstration mission than a science mission. Important scientific information will come from the water experiment on water content and distribution in the upper layer of the soil. The university experiment competition allows students to propose experiments with a scientific goal.
Who will build the water and solar experiments?
We have not yet selected a supplier for these experiments. Mars One will announce a 'request for proposal' for the experiments in 2014. The experiments with the best trade-off between mass, power, budget & performance will win. The suppliers will determine the deployment method of their experiment.
What are you plans for the STEM and University challenges?
Mars One will announce an 'invitation for proposal' for university teams in 2014 in which they can propose experiments. We are discussing details of the STEM challenges with various STEM partners. We expect high school students (14-18) to propose experiments of which one will fly to Mars. We expect the challenge winning group of students under 14 sending a letter to Mars which will wait to be read by the first group of astronauts.
Who will determine the winner of the various competitions?
The experiment partners, Mars One and the mission contributors will get a say. Members on Mars One's Community Platform will have voting rights. All contributors to our Indiegogo campaign will receive an invite to become a part of the Mars One Community.
Until when can payloads for the 2018 mission be proposed?
The deadline for the student competition will be announced in the call for proposals. We invite organizations who are interested in flying their payload to Mars to get in touch with Mars One as soon as possible as there is limited capacity on our 2018 lander.

The 2018 Mars Mission in More Detail

The Mars One 2018 demonstration mission is scheduled to launch in May of 2018. The lander design is based on the successful Mars lander, the 2007 NASA Phoenix mission, built by Lockheed Martin. Our lander, pictured below, will have the ability to scoop up Martian soil with a Phoenix-like robotic arm. How cool is that?
Lockheed Martin will perform a conceptual design study under which they will write the detailed project plan for the 2018 mission, determine the exact budget and program schedule. The cost of this study is $256,000.
SSTL, a 2013 IET innovation award winner and established satellite builder from the UK, will build the dedicated communications satellite. The satellite, seen below, will provide a high bandwidth communications system in a Mars synchronous orbit and will be used o relay data and a live video feed from the lander on the surface of Mars back to Earth.
The conceptual design study by SSTL will result in the design, timelines and budgets for the communications satellite that Mars One will need. The cost of this study is $80,000.
Beyond launch and landing on Mars and placing the satellite in orbit, the mission will prove numerous other technologies which will be important for our 2025 human mission and beyond. The payload of the 2018 lander will include:
    • camera which, in combination with the Mars-synchronous communications satellite, will enable us to send a 365 days per year video stream from Mars to Earth. You and everyone else on Earth will be able to take a ‘real time’ look on Mars.
    • water extraction experiment that confirm we can extract water from the Martian soil.  Once this technology is confirmed, we will have proven one of the most critically important aspects of human life on Mars.
    • thin film solar panel experiment testing multiple brands and types of thin film solar panels for their suitability in providing our crew the renewable energy they need to maintain and grow a human civilization.
    • A payload selected from the entries of universities worldwide.

    Mars One History and Team

Bas Lansdorp and Arno Wielders, the founders of Mars One, met in 2002 when Bas presented at a meeting of the Dutch Mars Society. They discovered they shared a passioned interest in manned Mars missions. In 2006 they met again when they participated in an ESA Mars habitat design workshop. Over the years after that, they exchanged ideas on human exploration of Mars. When two American scientists wrote an article about the technical feasibility of a Mars mission of permanent settlement, they decided to brainstorm about possible funding models of such a mission. When they found out that each Olympic Game yields almost enough revenue from broadcasting rights and sponsorship to finance an entire mission to Mars, they realized that they might just have found a way to realize their dream of a manned mission to Mars. Right then and there they founded Mars One.
After founding Mars One in early 2011, Bas and Arno developed a strategic plan for placing the first humans on Mars. The first year of Mars One yielded the completion of a feasibility study after calling upon experts from space agencies and private aerospace corporations around the world. In 2013, Mars One is proud to be connected to many advisers and ambassadors who support the concept and implementation of Mars One’s mission with their infinite knowledge and enthusiasm. The advisers and ambassadors vary from aerospace specialists, university professors with various backgrounds, prestigious scientists and even Nobel Prize winning theoretical physicist prof. Gerard ‘t Hooft.
Mars One’s current international team consists of the two founders Lansdorp (Netherlands) and Wielders (Netherlands), Medical Director Dr. Norbert Kraft (USA) who works on shaping a world wide selection procedure that will result in selecting the best candidates for the settlement on Mars, communications and marketing team members Suzanne Flinkenflögel (Netherlands), Anne Boeschoten (Netherlands) and KC Frank (USA) and Mission Concept Artist Bryan Versteeg (Canada).

    Risks and Challenges

Due to the nature of this project, which is bigger and more complicated than the average Indiegogo project, there are more risks and challenges involved, and there are a few extra considerations in addition to those provided on Indiegogo’s website. By making a pledge to Stichting Mars One's Indiegogo Project, you agree to accept the risks as we’ve defined them below, and any other risks even if they are not explicitly stated here.
In the future, we may have to request further information from Contributors to enable delivery of the rewards; change the dates on which we estimate that the Project will be finished or we will be able to deliver rewards; or make other changes. Mars One will do its best to notify you of any such changes via Indiegogo.com, its website, and / or any email address that you provide.
Engineering and Supply Chain — The 2018 private Mars Lander will change the way people view space and space exploration. A strong team of scientists and suppliers will manage the project and will design, assemble, integrate and test the components. That said, building a spacecraft is difficult and there are lots of uncertainties involved. We are constantly iterating our mission design concepts and prototypes. As a result, the final spacecraft may differ from current models. The mission design may also be influenced by the Indiegogo process, and may change following the campaign based on input from the contributors. We’re always ready to make design modifications to improve the design, educational experience and the ability to display your photo in Mars orbit.
Launch — Mars One intends to purchase a dedicated launch service for the communications satellite and lander together. Launching a spacecraft comes with a number of challenges:
    - Rockets can fail, resulting in loss or degradation of service. Launch risks are outside our control, but in the event that the worst happens, we will do our best to serve all pledges through followup Mars One missions.
    - The launch and operation of a spacecraft is technically complex and involves many risks beyond Mars One’s control. Mars One is not responsible for any failure to perform all or part of the Indiegogo Project if such failure is caused by what the lawyers like to call “force majeure” -- events or conditions beyond Mars One’s reasonable control such as explosion, acts of nature, war, civil disturbances, acts of civil or military authorities, legal or regulatory changes, asteroid impacts, alien invasions, dinosaur rampages or other causes beyond Mars One’s control.
Obtaining Rewards — To obtain a reward a Contributor must be verified following the completion of a successful campaign. All rewards are subject to availability and restrictions may apply as to when rewards can be provided. In the event Mars One is unable to fulfill any reward for any reason, Mars One will offer the affected Contributor a fair substitution of the reward or will provide a full refund of the contribution amount upon request.
    — Mars One is not responsible for lost or stolen rewards, certificates or tickets. Contributors are solely responsible for determining any tax liability arising out of rewards provided by Mars One. Contributors are subject to and must comply with any additional terms, conditions and restrictions that may apply to specific rewards. Unless otherwise specified in writing in these terms and conditions or on the Indiegogo.com page, Mars One is not responsible for providing meals, transportation or accommodation arrangements that may be associated with claiming a reward.
    — Certain rewards may be subject to minimum requirements regarding age or other factors. It is the Contributor's sole responsibility to comply with all necessary requirements for the reward as described.
All questions or disputes regarding eligibility for pledge rewards will be resolved solely by Mars One. Contributor agrees to hold Mars One and its affiliates and subsidiaries harmless against any loss or liabilities arising from Contributor’s participation in the Mars One's Indiegogo Project.
Everything regarding the Mars One's Indiegogo Project, including the website and all rewards, are provided “as is”.
